UNLIMITED SHOWCASE

In conjunction with Singapore Design Week 2016, this short workshop serves to document hand gestures on the medium of paper to form a collapsible structure composed of brass pipes, and be set up in a window display in SP Design School along side the graduating cohort's graduation showcase.

Students investigated and experimented with the gestures of Bend, Crease, Crush, Curve, Fold, Grab, Roll, Turn or Twist. From the explorations of these gestures, the medium of paper becomes 3D. A hand gesture is then assigned, causing the paper to develop more complex sets of structures that determine spatial augmentations.

The interpretations are then translated onto pipes, assembled together to form a 3D collapsible spatial structure.

This structure begun on paper by rolling and the secondary gesture was grabbing. Grabbing as a gesture was aggressive as compared to the gesture of rolling. It was hard to find harmony between the 'gentle' and 'fierce'.

The observations on the display is essentially a snippet of the student's personality: where the harsh and aggressive (grabbing action) gives complexity to the smooth and dynamic (rolling action).
